Escondido Reformed Baptist Church Covenant
|
The Escondido Reformed Baptist Church established a covenant comprised of God-ordained duties and obligations that we, the Body of Christ, are commanded to uphold. Below is a copy of that covenant to which our local body subscribes and submits. |

The Solemn Covenant of Escondido

We desire to walk together in the fear of the Lord, and we solemnly, in the presence of God, these witnesses, and each other, in the sense of our own unworthiness, give up ourselves to the Lord to be a church, according to the apostolic pattern. We desire that He be our God, and we His people, through the everlasting covenant of His free grace, in which alone we place our hope to be accepted by Him, through His blessed Son Jesus Christ. We take Him to be our High Priest, to justify and sanctify us, our Prophet to teach us; and our King to rule over us as our Lawgiver. We will endeavor to conform to all His holy laws and ordinances, for our growth, establishment, and consolation, that we may be a holy spouse to Him, and serve Him in our generation, and wait for His second appearance, as our glorious Bridegroom. We are convinced that the Scriptures of the Old and New Testaments are the verbally inspired, inerrant and infallible Word of God and joyfully place ourselves under its authority. We also embrace the London Baptist Confession of 1689 as a sufficient and accurate expression of the system of doctrine taught throughout the Holy Scriptures. We are agreed in matters of doctrine and practice, and are persuaded of the reality of the work of grace in some good measure in one another’s lives and therefore do solemnly join ourselves together in a holy union and fellowship, humbly submitting to the discipline of the Gospel, and all holy duties required of people who unite in this way. We believe that the Moral Law as summarized in the Ten Commandments, which was endorsed by our Lord Jesus Christ and reiterated by the Apostles throughout the New Testament, is our rule of life, and we will endeavor in God's strength to live according to its precepts. We promise and commit ourselves to walk together in all holiness, humility, and brotherly love, and as much as we are able, in order to make our fellowship delightful to God, edifying to ourselves, and lovely to the rest of the Lord's people, we will strive for the advancement of this church, in knowledge, holiness and comfort; to promote its prosperity and spirituality; to sustain its worship, ordinances, discipline, and doctrines; to contribute cheerfully and regularly to the support of the ministry including the expenses of the church, the relief of its poor, and the spread of the gospel through all nations. We promise to maintain spiritual devotion before the Lord in our families and in private; to bring up our children in the nurture and admonition of the Lord seeking to both instruct them in the Scriptures and evangelize their souls; to walk circumspectly in the world; to be just in our dealings, faithful in our engagements, and exemplary in our conduct. We promise to watch over each other's lives in brotherly love, and not to allow sin to overtake one another, so far as God shall make it known to us, and to stir up one another to love and good deeds; to warn, rebuke, and admonish one another with meekness, according to the rules about these things left to us by Christ; to pray for one another; to bear one another’s burdens; to aid each other in sickness and distress; to speak kindly; to be slow to take offense, but always ready for reconciliation, and mindful of the rules of our Savior so as to secure it without delay. We promise to bear with one another's weaknesses, failings, and faults, with much tenderness, not revealing them to any outside of the church, nor any within, unless according to Christ's rule, and the order of the Gospel. We promise to strive together for the truth of the Gospel and purity of God's ways and ordinances, to avoid causes of, and those who cause, division, endeavoring to keep the unity of the Spirit in the bond of peace. We promise to meet together on the Lord's Days, and at other times as needed unless providentially hindered, to serve and glorify God in His worship, to edify one another, and to promote the good of His church. We moreover promise that, when we remove from this membership, it will never be for unreconciled differences or sin(s), nor while under church discipline; and we will as soon as possible, as providence allows, unite with some other church where we can carry out the spirit of this covenant and the principles of God’s Word. These and all other Gospel duties we humbly submit to, promising and purposing to perform them, not in our own strength, being conscious of our own weakness, but in the power and strength of the blessed God, Whose we are, and Whom we desire to serve, to Whom be glory now and forevermore. Amen. |
